Many countries
have stuttering associations. These are often self-help
groups, but not always. Nor is the difference between a
self-help group and other associations always clear.
Self-help groups are well-established in stuttering, as
they are for many chronic problems. It would be interesting
to look at their effectiveness. Also, who chooses not to
join them, and why?
The International Stuttering
Association (ISA) is a worldwide
network of people who stutter, a non-profit umbrella
association dedicated to close cooperation among
independent national and international self-help
organizations of people who stutter. ISA was founded in
1995.
The ISA vision
is a world that understands stuttering. There is an
excellent article about the ISA, its
history, activities and more written by Jaan Pill
here.
Passing Twice is an informal network
of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender stutterers
and their friends.
There are a large number of other self-help groups around
the world.
